Our guest speaker was Steven Williams, Associate Director of Pennsylvania Statewide Afterschool/Youth Development Network (PSAYDN). Here are notes from his very compelling presentation:

  • American Rescue Plan was signed in March; for PA it means billions of dollars focused on different aspects of the state

    • Especially education + after school programs

    • $100 million for out-of-school time programs

      • PA Department of Education needs to formally adopt the plan for fund allocation

  • Money to school districts

    • 20% is for mitigating learning loss, schools can be creative about how they want to do that - i.e. partnering with community based organizations

    • School districts need external support for ways to spend funds

    • Anyone offering services should reach out to school district, school superintendent to inquire

  • Programs must be sustainable, highly accountable, evidence-based

    • While there are guidelines, the programs can still be creative

    • Sustainable programs are likely to receive money for three or more years, but must reapply with school district

Request the email blast at www.psaydn.org for more information.

Coming soon via the blast: A study on the returns from money spent on after school programs in PA shows that every dollar spent on programs results in a $6.69 return. This is a statistic that can be included in grant applications and other narratives.

PSAYDN is advocating for a line item in the state budget for after school programs; in CA they put $600 million per year.
